If you’re a cocktail aficionado, an aspiring mixologist, or just someone who appreciates a well-made drink, head to Alexandria the week of September 8 to 17 to take part in Old Town Cocktail Week. This boozy celebration, hosted by Old Town Business, will feature specialty cocktails, seminars with local bartenders, and other themed events.
The purpose of this celebration is to “engage with local establishments and the ever-growing cocktail culture,” according to Old Town Business.
“Each year, Old Town Business will continually grow and evolve the events that will be held to reflect the cocktail community here in Old Town Alexandria,” Old Town Business said on its website.
There will be 22 bars, restaurants, and retail shops offering specialty cocktails and programs during cocktail week, including Ada’s on the River, Bastille Brasserie & Bar, King and Rye, and Vermilion.
Here are just a few of the events taking place during cocktail week:
Art on the Rocks at Waterfront Park
Friday, September 8, 5:30–8:30 p.m.
Art, food, and cocktails collide in this kickoff event. Chefs and mixologists are tasked with creating a cocktail and appetizer pairing inspired by a piece of art by an Alexandria Art League artist. Sample the food and cocktail pairings, then vote for your favorite combination. Waterfront Park: 1A Prince St., Alexandria, $70
Old Town Cocktail Week Cruise
Sunday, September 10, 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Join RailBird Kitchen and Captain Gregory’s for a nautical cocktail voyage. You can take a 90-minute cruise around Alexandria on the Tall Ship Providence and enjoy two specialty cocktails made with rum. Note: You must be 21 for this cruise. Bountiful Harvest Cocktails with King’s Ransom
Wednesday, September 13, 6–7:30 p.m.
The pros at King’s Ransom will lead a hands-on seminar that will demonstrate how to use seasonal produce in cocktails. You’ll receive a welcome drink and light fare, then learn how to craft two cocktails of your own. King’s Ransom: 728 King St., Alexandria, $50
Mastering the Martini with Nick Farrell
Saturday, September 16, 3 p.m.
Want to order a martini like James Bond? NRG spirit director Nick Farrell will break down the essential elements of the classic cocktail, from the type of spirit to use to the different degrees of vermouth.
