A Richmond man is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a spate of violence in Reston early Sunday.
According to Fairfax County Police, Dana Paul Roman, 45, shot himself in Richmond after a spree that included abduction, carjacking, shooting, and stabbing. He took his life after a police pursuit ended in a crash and took off on foot.
Here’s how the crime spree unfolded. Just before 2 a.m. Sunday, the Fairfax County Police Department said officers responded to the 12000 block of Thunder Chase Drive for a shooting. They found one person inside the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. That person was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A second person was found in a car nearby suffering a stab wound to the arm and trauma to the face. That individual was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said detectives determined that Roman had assaulted and abducted the second person from Henrico County and the abduction continued into Fairfax County.
When they arrived at Thunder Chase Drive, police said Roman got out of the car and started shooting, striking the first victim, then he started running. Police said the spree was not random and those involved knew each other.
After a search involving a police dog, a Fairfax County helicopter, and the Virginia State Police, Roman could not be found.
Police said a third victim was later identified in Henrico County. The third victim, who was unharmed, had been carjacked by Roman in Reston and was forced to drive Roman back to Henrico.
After the crime spree, police in obtained six warrants against Roman for abduction by force, carjacking, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, malicious wounding, and assault. In Henrico County, there were active warrants for malicious wounding and robbery.
Just before 10:30 a.m. Monday, Henrico Police reported Roman had been found and was pursued into Richmond, where Roman crashed the car and took off on foot, according to a news release. He then shot himsel in the area of North 35th Street and East Marshall Street.
