Pink Moon, 1st Full Moon of Spring, Won’t Really be Pink

The first full moon of spring is named for pink flowers that are some of the first to bloom.

By Colleen Kelleher April 5, 2023 at 9:54 am

The April full moon, which starts Wednesday night, is typically known as the Pink Moon, but don’t expect it to look pink.

It’s the first full moon of the spring. The name, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, comes from pink creeping phlox, which are some of the first flowers to bloom in spring.

Full moons occur when the sun and the moon are on opposites side of the Earth.

In the Northern Virginia area, the moon will rise at 7:17 p.m. Wednesday.

The full moon will be at its peak illumination at 12:34 a.m. Thursday, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Other full moons this year will be on the following dates, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac:

  • May 5: Flower moon
  • June 3: Strawberry moon
  • July 3: Buck moon
  • August 1: Sturgeon moon
  • August 30: Blue moon
  • September 29: Harvest moon
  • October 28: Hunter’s moon
  • November 27: Beaver moon
  • December 26: Cold moon
