Fairfax County detectives believe a Herndon man shot his wife and then himself on a trail in Reston Wednesday afternoon, a preliminary investigation by the police department found.
The police on Friday identified the two as Patricia Garverick, 69, and Richard Garverick, 75.
Officers responded around 3 p.m. Tuesday to Stratton Woods Park at 2431 Fox Mill Road after someone found the couple on the trail. The Garvericks, who had gunshot wounds to the upper body, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The police said they found a firearm and cartridge casings at the scene.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will confirm how they died.
