On the Market: A Colonial Farmette in Leesburg Built Before the American Revolution

Original hardwood flooring, double porch, and winding staircases add to the character of this 18th-century home.

You know you’re looking at a historic home when fireplaces outnumber bedrooms. Built circa 1743, over 30 years before the American Revolution, the Colonial American “farmette” at 40873 Canongate Dr., Leesburg — also known as the Shenstone Manor House — is full of history.

Originally a dairy farm, the land surrounding this property has since transformed into the Estates at Shenstone Farm neighborhood. But don’t let the modern homes fool you, because this four-bedroom, 3.5-bath farmhouse is packed with original features and charming details. Sitting on 6.45 acres, the property includes two barns with a combined 14 stalls, a spring-fed pond, six fireplaces, and so much more. This 18th-century home is currently listed for $1,100,000.

Imagine this rustic scene being the first thing you see every day when you walk through the front door. If the original wood flooring and cooking fireplace don’t make you swoon, the exposed beams and rustic details throughout the lower level will.

Just to the right of this picture-perfect entryway, you’ll find the kitchen. Don’t worry, this room has been renovated over the years, so the cooking fireplace only needs to be used as a conversation starter instead of a dinner necessity. Just past the kitchen island, you’ll also find the most charming breakfast nook that includes another fireplace (one of six throughout the house) and a sunny view for enjoying your morning coffee.

Nights are meant to be spent lounging in this family room. While the original flooring continues throughout the space, the gas fireplace and wood accent wall shine as the focal point — both adding to the warm, cozy farmhouse feeling.  And, if you run out of seats on the couch, make your way to the bench by the bay window, which is a prime spot to take in the idyllic backyard views.

The angled ceilings and cutouts of this primary bedroom provide nooks and crannies, as well as unique views of the property. With windows adorning three of the four walls, it’s all but certain you’ll wake up to inspiring Virginia sunrises. The ample natural light combined with the lighter floors guarantees the room will stay bright throughout the day.

farmhouse patio and porch

As someone who grew up in a rural community, my favorite part of this house has to be the outdoor space. There’s nothing like sitting on the porch in a rocking chair as a rain storm passes through town. And this farm house has plenty of outdoor options: Whether you want to sit back on the front porch or upstairs balcony (which opens to the study), or entertain guests on the stone patio, the views are sure to be incredible.
