On the Market: An Alexandria Home That Pre-Dates the Declaration of Independence

Northern Virginia is full of history and it’s probably safe to say this 252-year-old home has seen its fair share.

We know that the entire region is full of history, but it’s not often that you can own a piece of that history for yourself. That’s unless you become the new owner of the home at 304 N. Pitt St. in Alexandria.

Built in 1770, the 252-year-home was around back when Virginia was just a colony. Currently listed at $1.7 million, the Georgian-style home’s first owners include a merchant and rope maker. After undergoing multiple expansions and renovations, the home now features almost 3,000 square feet with four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, two gardens, and three fireplaces.

The built-ins in this library and throughout this house would melt any book lover’s heart. This wall-to-wall set, and smaller versions in the dining room and living room, are perfect for extra storage space or showing off a rare collection. This room also features a gas fireplace, providing a picturesque scene for those cold Alexandria winters.

white kitchen farmhouse style

The kitchen was last renovated in the 1960s or 1970s, but it gives off a cozy and bright vibe. The all-white color scheme and natural light from the garden makes the space pop; while the neutral flooring acts as a warming accent.

living room

No matter which way you decide to set up your furniture, you’ll have a great view in the living room. Whether it’s outdoor views through the windows or choosing the original fireplace as the focal point, it’s set to be the gathering place when all of your guests drop by.

bedroom with fireplace and wood floors

The charming primary bedroom feels like it could have been pulled right from a local B&B. From the ample natural lighting (thanks to the four large windows) to the brick fireplace and wide-plank hardwood floors, it’s easily the coziest spot in the house.

While the garden space is narrow, it definitely uses every inch to its advantage. The pergola in the south garden provides the perfect semi-shady spot to enjoy your morning coffee. If you need a little more sun, head to the other end of the walkway to set up a special serene nook.
