Prince William Public Library Is Joining the Battle Against Seasonal Depression

SAD lamps come to the Prince William County Public Library right in time to fight your wintertime blues.

By Meredith Lindemon November 17, 2021 at 10:01 am

The days continue to get shorter and, perhaps, so does your temper. Seasonal Affective Disorder, which causes depression, fatigue, or social withdrawal, hits those who suffer from it during the winter as it’s believed to be caused by a lack of direct sunlight, which gives us Vitamin D. While many people don’t address the issue as it’s dependent on the season, it’s easy to treat just by getting exposure to a source of direct light.

Here to help is the Prince William Public Library, which has almost 20 SAD lamps you can check out like a book, reserve in advance, renew, or put on hold.

Healthline says that you should use the device according to the instructions, which vary by maker, but for the most part, you sit in front of it with the light shining downward for about 20 minutes each day until you notice your mood improve and you talk to your doctor about how to discontinue using it.

SAD lamps trigger your brain to release serotonin and help adjust your circadian rhythm, which regulates your sleep-wake cycle, helping you to get more restful sleep. Light therapy has also been shown to reduce jet lag and dementia.

Light boxes designed to treat SAD shouldn’t damage your skin or eyes, but they do mimic the light of the sun. They tend to start working, with users noticing an increase in their mood, after three to five days.

You can check out a SAD lamp by going to the Prince William Public Library’s website and searching the card catalog for it, then reserving or checking it out.

If you think you might benefit from a SAD lamp, it’s wise to get in line and reserve yours soon, as availability is limited. 1 County Complex Ct., Prince William
