Want a long wiener? I know how to get one. I also know how to get a short wiener, a Thueringer, a Stuttgarter, and a Debreziner. In fact, at German Gourmet in Falls Church, there are 18 different sausages to choose from. They’re all in the case, ready to take home to grill.
But for $6.50, it’s a mistake not to get one cooked for you and served on a Portuguese roll with a choice of condiments, including all the necessities like sauerkraut, curry ketchup, and remoulade. Yet there’s more to a meaty German meal than sausage.
The case at German Gourmet is also filled to the brim with imported cold cuts, too. The Deutscher Sub is stacked with them. Craving headcheese or liverwurst? They’ve got that, too. There are also doners, schnitzel sandwiches, and frikadellen.
Scanning the menu, though, it was clear that I had to order the Tyrolean. Served on fresh sunflower bread, that sandwich combines smoked pork loin, double-smoked bacon, and bacon stuffed with even more finely ground meat. The slices are thinner than I had hoped, but for $8.25, I wasn’t too surprised. It’s certainly enough salty flesh to compete with the grilled onion and crunchy Tyrolean cabbage piled on top. And there’s still plenty of sausage to take home for another round.// 5838 Columbia Pike, Falls Church
