Animal Welfare League of Alexandria closes its doors, but remains open for business

In a cautionary move, the pet shelter is closing its doors beginning March 17. But that doesn’t mean adoptions are halting.

For many Northern Virginia residents, working from home for the next two weeks or more is the new normal, which means many get to cuddle up with their pets as they complete remote assignments. And for those who don’t have pets, it may have you thinking, “It would be nice to have a dog right now.”

If the current state of the region has you thinking more about adopting a cuddly friend, then this update is for you. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria is closing its doors today, Tuesday, March 17, but will remain open for business.

Animals are still available for adoption, and interested parties can make an appointment to meet with, and potentially adopt, a pet. Email [email protected] to make an appointment or ask any questions. See a list of adoptable animals here.

For those who currently have a hold on an adoptable animal, the League is honoring that hold during the closure, and will follow up to schedule a time for the adoption consultation and to complete the adoption process.

In times of crisis, many decide to surrender their animals to local shelters. If you need to do so, please email [email protected] to make an appointment. Those considering surrendering should only do so in cases of emergency to make sure there is enough room for all the animals at the shelter, as the League anticipates adoption rates will decrease in the weeks ahead.

All public events associated with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria have been canceled or postponed through Monday, April 13. For more information, visit alexandriaanimals.com. // Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: 4101 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria
