Annually, for the past 23 years, Fortune magazine releases a list called “Best Companies to Work For in the U.S.,” which compares workplace conditions across the country.

This year, five Northern Virginia-based companies were named to the list, including McLean-headquartered Hilton, which earned the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row. This is the fifth consecutive year Hilton has been named to the list.

Other regional companies that earned accolades include Vienna’s Navy Federal Credit Union, which landed in No. 19; Tysons-based Capital One, which earned the No. 24 spot; Custom Ink, headquartered in Fairfax, which came in at No. 92; and McLean’s Mars, which was listed at No. 98.

Fortune teamed up with people analytics firm Great Place to Work to determine this year’s list, using an ongoing, annual workforce study that represents more than 4.1 million employees. Participating employees responded to over 60 survey questions describing their HR programs and practices.
