As the weather gets colder and your hours in the sun are shortened, it can seem more challenging to keep your children entertained on a regular basis. But just because your activities are limited to indoor spaces doesn’t mean you have to panic.
Here in Northern Virginia, the variety of youth recreational winter leagues is more than enough to ensure your kids remain healthy and happy all season long. And below, we share a comprehensive list of what sports your child can try out, where they can play and when exactly you need to secure their spots on the team.
Arlington County
House Basketball
Ages: Grades 1-2, grades 3-8 and grades 9-12
Registration: Opened Sept. 16 for grades 1-8, opening Nov. 12 for grades 9-12
Season details: Practices and games will continue from mid-November through early March.

Youth Recreational Winter Indoor Soccer
Ages: Grades 1-2, grades 3-6, grades 7-8 and high school students; all split by gender
Registration: Opens Oct. 7, closes Nov. 3
Season details: Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 1 to March 1

Alexandria
Boys & Girls Winter Basketball League
Ages: 7-17 years old as of March 31, 2020
Registration: Open now through Nov. 15
Season details: Teams are formed by age group, as well as by recreation districts with the exception of boys ages 14 to 17, which will be based on a skill assessment and a draft system.

Annandale Boys & Girls Club Basketball County League
Ages: Grades 5-8
Registration: Open now to mid-November
Season details: This is a competitive league that prepares students for high school basketball. Teams are selected following rigorous tryouts in October.

Season details: While practices start in December, players will be evaluated at the beginning of the season to allow for more balanced teams.
