Invasive beetle species arrives in Central Virginia; Storms and high temperatures expected in DMV today

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Friday, Aug. 16.

Virginia forestry officials are warning the public about the spread of a highly invasive, destructive beetle species in Henrico County. The Emerald Ash Borer is one of the most destructive forest pests in North America, says the Virginia Department of Forestry. Citizens are urged not to transport ash for firewood across state lines. More storms are expected in the DMV on Friday, with a high possibility for locally heavy rains and a few severe-level storms, and could affect the area from noon into the late evening. Look out for high temperatures this weekend as highs reach the mid-90s. (WUSA9)

Loudoun South is enjoying the spotlight during its Little League World Series run in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The team will play its first game today at 10 a.m. due to a Thursday night rain delay. Before Loudoun South qualified for the 16-team tournament a Virginia team had not qualified in 25 years. (Inside NoVA)

B. Doughnuts in Leesburg is set to close on Aug. 25 to transition into a mobile model business. The doughnut location launched in 2015 in Baltimore (with the second location opening in Leesburg in December 2016) and is owned by Ashburn residents Pin and Brian Chanthapanya. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
