Alexandria DASH gets electric buses; Arlington under flash flood watch

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Thursday, July 11.

By Editorial July 11, 2019 at 10:09 am

After receiving a $5.1 million grant, Alexandria’s DASH bus system is set to add six electric buses to its circuit just in time for Amazon’s HQ2 development. The new electric buses will replace older, diesel-fueled buses that the city finds to be harder to maintain and are costly. DASH hopes to have the zero-emission busses up and running within the next 12 to 18 months. (WUSA9)

Arlington has declared a state of emergency after the flash floods that took place on Monday, but now the city is once again under a flash flood watch as late-day storms make their way toward the DMV. The watch will be in effect from 2 p.m. into the night. (ARL Now)

Shenandoah National Park officials are urging visitors to be aware of the dangers of bears stealing food in parks across the region. The latest incident at Old Rag Mountain was the second food-stealing incident by a bear in one week, and the park has since increased ranger presence. (Inside NoVA)

July 11 is free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven. Customers can get a free small Slurpee from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at locations around NoVA, with flavors including Coke, cherry, sugar-free cherry limeade and this year’s featured flavor, blueberry lemonade. The company expects to give out roughly 9 million free Slurpees. (Inside NoVA)
