Scare at Union Station on Sunday; U.S. 29 closed starting July 8

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Monday, July 8.

By Editorial July 8, 2019 at 8:58 am

On Sunday, July 7, loud bangs in Union Station left travelers and visitors mistaking the sounds for gun shots and running for the exits. Kevin Donahue, DC’s deputy mayor for public safety, confirmed there was no active shooter or gunshot victims, and that the sounds were likely from accidental fireworks being set off in the building. Part of Northbound U.S. 29 is set to be closed for three weeks starting today, July 8, in attempts to improve the safety issues at the intersection of 29 and Vint Hill Road. Virginia Department of Transportation plans to flatten the road by removing hills, with hopes of improving driver visibility to avoid accidents. (WTOP)

Former Prince William County resident and Forest Park graduate Ali Krieger is now a three-time World Cup champion, alongside the United States’ women’s national soccer team. Krieger was a reserve defender for the team who came in at halftime, and the team later topped the Netherlands 2-0 in Lyon, France. (Inside NoVA)

Arlington Community Foundation awarded more than $540,000 in scholarships to 72 students who will attend college next year. An additional $281,000 was given as renewal scholarships for a total of 177 students. Each scholarship varied in criteria for local students, and ranged in value from $1,000 to $10,000 to be used for higher education. (ARL Now)
