Metro Board Chairman to resign; Arlington could see $20 million in bus improvements

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Friday, June 21.

By Editorial June 21, 2019 at 8:46 am

Metro Board Chairman Jack Evans is set to resign next week. Evans released a letter outlining his plans after being continuously under fire during a federal investigation for potentially using his public positions for personal gain. His term as chairman ends as of June 27 otherwise, but the Metro Board did not have the power to remove him, even if they wanted to. (WTOP)

The Commonwealth Transportation Board voted on Wednesday, June 19, to offer nearly $20 million in potential bus improvements to buses around Arlington, specifically serving commuters on and around i-66. The project would impact over 3,000 commuters with new buses and routes, as well as OmniRide Express services. (ARL Now)

It’s been 10 years since the infamous rush-hour Red Line crash on June 22, 2009 that occurred right outside of the Fort Totten Station. Nine people were killed and at least 80 were hurt, and it was only the second time in history that Metro riders had been killed in a crash in the system’s history. A memorial is set for Saturday. Christina Mellot, a 17-year-old from South Riding, is a national finalist in Duck Tape’s Stuck at Prom Scholarship competition. The competition challenges high school students to make a dress or tuxedo entirely out of Duck Tape, and the winner (one tuxedo, one dress) will receive $10,000. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
