Tony, Grammy and Emmy award-winner Audra McDonald is setting the stage for the 2019-2020 season of Great Performances at Mason, hosted by George Mason University.
The College of Visual and Performing Arts welcomes a lengthy list of performers each year from the disciplines of classical music, modern dance, opera, jazz, ballet, theater and global music, in hopes of inspiring its students and local community members with a well-rounded experience and exposure to various genres and high-caliber performers.
The season is set to start on Sept. 28 with McDonald, who will perform a mix of hits from Broadway and the Great American Songbook, at the ARTS by George! benefit, which raises funds for student scholarships and community arts programs through the university.
Throughout the rest of the season, tickets are available for everything from the Virginia Opera to a live recording of NPR’s From the Top. Family-friendly performances for the school’s Family Series will feature performances from a showing of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Christmas (Dec. 1) to Hot Peas n’ Butter, a night of global music for all ages that features songs in Spanish, Korean, Hebrew and French (March 1, 2020).
Performances from the new Mason Artists-in-Residence program will also make their debut, where Latin American group LADAMA will perform for Hispanic Heritage Month (Oct. 4), Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane dance company will have its world debut of its new performance On the Water (Feb. 1, 2020) and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra with conductor Maria Schneider (April 11, 2020).
