WMATA launches two-year study; Two DMV hospitals named in top 10 in U.S.

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Tuesday, June 18.

WMATA is launching a two-year study of the Blue, Orange and Silver lines with hopes of improving service, reducing delays and lowering rates of crowding. The three lines merge onto one set of tracks at the Rosslyn station, which makes for ample opportunity for varying disruptions when there are single-line delays, ongoing maintenance and other issues. The Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, as well as the Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, have been named in the top 10 best children hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. The two DMV hospitals were listed on the “Honor Roll,” and were distinguished in all 10 of the specialties factored into the report. (WTOP)

Construction has started in the Federal Express, a 10-mile extension of the I-95 Express Lanes from south of Garrisonville Road to U.S. 17 near the Rappahannock River. The project will cost $565 million and is financed by Transurban, a private partner that helped develop HOV toll lanes from DC to Stafford, rather than tax revenue. (Inside NoVA)

Loudoun County will establish its first lynching memorial site on Wednesday, June 19, in honor of three African-American men who were lynched between 1880 and 1902. The site is at the intersection of the Washington and Old Dominion Trail and Harrison Street in southeast Leesburg. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)
