National Park Service announces peak bloom dates for region’s cherry blossoms

Here’s when you can expect the pink flowers to be their prettiest throughout DC and NoVA.

Update: On March 26, the National Park Service announced that it has a new prediction for when peak bloom will arrive. NPS is now predicting peak bloom will be on April 1.

Spring is on its way in, and for the Northern Virginia region that means one thing: cherry blossom season.

On March 6, the National Park Service (NPS) announced the peak bloom dates and the full blooming period for the cherry blossoms in DC and NoVA. Peak bloom is predicted to be from April 3-6.

Peak bloom dates are defined as the days when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open. Peak bloom can vary annually depending on weather conditions, but the most likely time to reach peak bloom is between the last week of March and the first week of April, according to NPS.

The length of the blooming period also depends on weather conditions, but the Yoshino trees typically bloom for several days. This year’s first green buds on the trees were spotted by NPS horticulturists on March 5.
