“Cuticle oil is going to be your best friend,” says Gutierrez. “If you have a hangnail, it can basically heal your hangnail and it will keep your manicure last longer. A lot of the reason polish chips is because it is dry.”

“Always use a base coat and a top coat to protect nails,” says Nguyen.

Moisturize.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet. Diet plays a big part.

“If your nails are super long, trim first then file,” says Nguyen. “Just filing will put a lot of pressure on the nail.”

When clipping nails, clip straight across; don’t clip the sides because, especially on toe nails, that can cause ingrown nails. Use the nail file to round off edges.

Don’t take off too much of your foot calluses. If you’re a runner, you need those calluses. And, the more you remove the more will come back later.
