Calvin Run Mill hosts Maple Syrup Boil-Down events
The first event of this kind was held on Feb. 11, but other opportunities to watch and learn how sap becomes syrup—and sample the sweet result over Calvin Run Mill cornbread—will take place from noon-2 p.m. on Feb. 25 and March 4. Cost of attendance is $5 per person.
Dead Run Stream Restoration begins this month
A pedestrian bridge, three tributaries, a stream buffer and around 3,000 feet of Dead Run Stream will undergo improvements this month at McLean Central Park and the Dead Run Stream Valley Park. Until construction concludes in April, expect some trail closures.
Sully Historic Site hosts Lunch and Learn: Black History Month
Those looking to learn a little bit about Carter G. Woodson, the man who in 1926 established Negro History Week, can do so by bringing their lunches over to the Sully Historic Site and taking in a presentation that features hands-on components. The event, costing $5 for Fairfax County residents and $7 for out-of-county guests, will take place Feb. 15 at noon.
Construction to begin at Lisle Park playground
Through the $80,000 Lisle Park Playground Replacement Project, beginning in March and estimated to end in May, Lisle Park’s old equipment will be swapped out with newer replacements. Lisle Park (7744 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church) will be closed once construction begins.
Opinions sought in Four Mile Run Valley draft policy
Those interested in the potential changes that may come to the Four Mile Run Valley are able to review a draft of the proposed changes and voice their opinions on the projects through Feb. 16. Among the propose changes: a public/private investment involving the arts through studio/theater/rehearsal space, better natural area access points and adding more pedestrian crossings.
Arlington Mill Community Center’s third floor to host Aspire! After-School Learning
The Aspire! After-School Learning program has been helping 3rd-5th grade students with academic achievement and social/emotional development since 2015. Through the approval of a new lease, Aspire! has found a home on the third floor of the Arlington Mill Community Center.
National Park Service asking public to weigh-in on Lincoln Memorial renovations
The National Park Service is considering three different approaches to potentially improving the appearance of the Lincoln Memorial: make no changes, make significant changes (adding a 15,000 square-foot area below the statue chamber for exhibits, education and research), or only do a few minor improvements (updating/improving bathrooms, adding a picture window). The public is encouraged to share their thoughts by March 7 and attend a public meeting on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. at the National Building Museum.
Loudoun County to pay up to $7,000 per acre to landowners planting stream buffers
Through March 15, Loudoun County landowners can submit applications to plant stream buffers along waterways and be reimbursed up to $7,000 per acre for supplies and labor. This project, organized by the Loudoun Soil and Water Conservation District and the Loudoun County government, hopes to improve water quality.
