After 17 years The Dairy Godmother is closing. The beloved Del Ray custard shop—name a summer day when there wasn’t a line out the door of parents, kids and pups—shut down earlier this week for its normal seasonal vacation, but today, owner Liz Davis announced it’s not reopening.

A staple of downtown Del Ray, The Dairy Godmother received national attention when the Obamas visited early in his tenure. While Alexandria is saturated with dessert shops, Dairy Godmother differentiated itself with its Wisconsin-style frozen custard and a streamlined menu: chocolate, vanilla and the flavor of the day.

Next Friday, the pop-up Salt | Bagel is taking over the space until Feb. 26. At this time, Salt | Bagel’s Chad Breckinridge doesn’t have plans to extend his stay in the space.

The full note from Davis can be found her site.
