Where to Go Indoor Rock Climbing in Northern Virginia

Grab a rope and harness and hit the wall this winter.

By Michele Kettner February 19, 2024 at 12:06 pm

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to stop your favorite outdoor activities. Instead, take them indoors. If you’re an avid rock climber or want to try rock climbing for the first time, there are plenty of indoor facilities in Northern Virginia.

Evolution Boulders

Spend a day at NoVA’s bouldering-only rock climbing gym. Climbers can choose to take 14 different zones on three different boulders, including The Big Boulder, The Arch, and the Kilter Board. Intro classes are available to help gain confidence before you take on the wall by yourself. 10371 Central Park Dr., Ste. B, Manassas

Movement

It’s almost guaranteed that you won’t get bored at this climbing studio. Movement has more than 200 climbing routes, 130 bouldering problems, and 35,000 square feet of climbing space. You can also find classes for all levels, youth programs, and private coaching. 1235 S. Clark St., Arlington

Rapp Rocks Climbing Gym

If you’re looking for a winter activity for the whole family, head to this Fredericksburg facility. The space has 3,000 square feet of climbing surface, including bouldering walls, rope climbing, and an adjustable kilter board, making it a perfect spot for climbers of all ages and levels. 11050 Pierson Dr., Ste. 103, Fredericksburg

Sportrock Climbing Centers

Open since 1994, Sportrock was the first commercial climbing gym in the region. The facility has everything first-time and experienced climbers could want, including classes, clinics, and open climb sessions. Plus, there are yoga and fitness classes for the days you can’t make it up the wall. Multiple locations

Vertical Rock Climbing & Fitness Center

This climbing studio offers the best of both worlds. The Manassas location is more focused on rock climbing, and features a variety of ropes classes to get the hang of climbing. At the Tysons location, you’ll find the bouldering terrain, with over 150 problems to solve. 10225 Nokesville Rd., Manassas; 8461 Leesburg Pk., Tysons
