If you want to travel on the Dulles Greenway and avoid paying tolls, there’s a better way that doesn’t involve running the booth—and it’s all for a worthy cause.
On Saturday, May 1, the Dulles Greenway is holding its inaugural Run the Greenway, an annual event bringing together more than 1,200 NoVA runners and their families for a 5K and 10K race, 800-meter kids’ fun run, and a virtual option. Run the Greenway celebrates the 25th anniversary of the toll road connecting Loudoun County to the Washington Metropolitan Region. It kicks off at 6:50 a.m. with opening remarks, followed by the 5K and 10K at 7 a.m. and the kids’ run at 9:30 a.m.
Starting at the Mainline Toll Plaza, located at 45035 Flight Crew Dr. in Dulles, the race will raise funds for more than 25 Loudoun charities, including the Dulles South Food Pantry, ECHO, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, and Step Sisters. The Dulles Greenway will donate $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000 to the organizations and individuals who raise the largest amount of money, and the toll road will also donate $1,000 to select participating charities on behalf of race winners.
“The Dulles Greenway is committed to serving the Loudoun community and we are honored to directly support the positive contributions that our charity partners are making in our local community during this difficult time,” says Renée N. Hamilton, CEO of TRIP II, a limited partnership that owns the concession to operate the Greenway until 2056.
To comply with the CDC’s and Virginia Forward Phase 3 guidelines, five runners will be released every five to ten seconds in waves to 50 to maintain appropriate social distancing. The event is one of the few in-person races being held this spring.
To accommodate the races, the Dulles Greenway will be closed from Rt. 28 to Rt. 772 (Exit 6 at Ashburn Village Blvd) on Saturday, May 1 from 3:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m; the Greenway will remain open for Eastbound travel. Travelers are encouraged to use Waxpool Road to Rt. 772 or Rt. 28 North to Rt. 7 to bypass the event.
