6 fun and healthy activities for the first weekend of December

From a bike ride around the Nation’s Capital to an ugly sweater yoga session, get in your daily workout at one of these fitness events.

By Michele Kettner December 1, 2020 at 11:38 am

As we enter the thick of the holiday season, it is easy to skip your usual workout for a shopping trip to grab some last minute presents. This weekend, whether you want to take a festive yoga class or try out a new hobby, make your fitness a priority by attending one of these six healthy activities this weekend.

Hike with a Naturalist

Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon
Enjoy the views of the season around the Bull Run Mountains. Join a local naturalist to learn about the flora and fauna of the region as you take in the beautiful sights and wildlife. // Leopold’s Preserve: 16290 Thoroughfare Road, Broad Run; free

Carlyle Yoga & Mimosas

Saturday, 9-11 a.m.
Combine your workout session with Saturday brunch at The Westin. The monthly yoga series features an outdoor class followed by a free mimosa. Participants will need to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing. // The Westin’s Trademark Drink and Eat: 2080 Jamieson Ave., Alexandria; $5

DC Memorial Cycling Tour

Saturday, 9:30 a.m.
Grab your bike and head across the river to DC. While you get in your exercise for the day, take in the beautiful historic sites and memorials around the District. A historian will also join the ride to give context to all of the historical sites, including the National Air Force Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery and the 9/11 Memorial at the Pentagon. // Union Station Parking Garage: 30 Massachusetts Ave. NE, Washington, DC; $15

4th Annual Ugly Sweaterasana

Saturday, 9:30-11 a.m.
Throw on your favorite ugly sweater and bring the holiday spirit to your next yoga class. This all-level vinyasa yoga class includes special music for the season and drinks. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mats.  // Fair Winds Brewing Company: 7000 Newington Road, Suites K & L, Lorton; $25

Learn The Ropes Rock Climbing Intro Class

Sunday, 3-5 p.m.
Make rock climbing your new hobby this winter. Start off by taking an introduction class that goes over the fundamentals and safety procedures of top-rope rock climbing. After you get in some hands-on practice this week, come back and take the certification test and start planning your ultimate outdoor adventure. // Vertical Rock Indoor Climbing and Fitness Center: 10225 Nokesville Road, Manassas; free for members, $35 for non-members

Ugly Sweater Virtual 5K & 10K
