Northern Virginia Data Center Causes Amazon Web Services Disruption

The issue affected websites, apps, banking services, and gaming sites.

By Debbie Williams October 20, 2025 at 10:36 am

Cloud-based Amazon Web Services (AWS) was offline for several hours early Monday morning. The problem stemmed from technical issues at a Northern Virginia data center.

Amazon first reported the issue at 12:11 a.m. PDT, saying, “We are investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region,” which is located in Northern Virginia.

The outage affected multiple websites and apps. According to Fast Company, these included major sites like Amazon Prime Video, Apple Music, AT&T, and Delta Airlines.

Finance and banking apps were disrupted such as Coinbase and Venmo. Affected social media and communication sites included Zoom, Snapchat, Signal, Slack, X, Ring, and Reddit. Major gaming platforms were also down, such as Roblox, Fortnite, PlayStation, and Xbox.

AWS has not disclosed what caused the outage but says it has been mitigated. Amazon operates dozens of data centers in Northern Virginia, including at least 10 in Sterling, nine in Manassas, eight in Ashburn, and five in Chantilly, according to datacenters.com.
