Texas School District Bans Virginia State Flag for ‘Frontal Nudity’

The district removed a section on Virginia from an online database.

A school district in Texas has removed information about Virginia from its online learning database because the state flag depicts an exposed breast, Axios reported.

A Freedom of Information Act request by the Texas Freedom to Read Project found that Lamar Consolidated Independent School District pulled the section on Virginia from PebbleGo Next, a database used by third to fifth graders, because of “frontal nudity” in the state flag. Lamar CISD is a public school district about 30 minutes outside of Houston.

The school district recently updated its board policies on library materials. The new policies state that, “No material in elementary school libraries shall include visual depictions or illustrations of frontal nudity.”

The Virginia state flag includes an image of the Roman goddess Virtus, the deity of bravery and military strength, standing over a “defeated tyrant.” It also includes the state motto, “Sic semper tyrannis,” which translates to “Thus always to tyrants.”
