2 Men Face Charges for BASE Jumping from Arlington Apartment Building

The pair reportedly donned helmets and parachutes before jumping from the roof of a 21-story building.

Two men, ages 30 and 26, are facing criminal charges after allegedly parachuting off the roof of a Ballston apartment building, ARLNow reports.

The daredevils reportedly headed to the roof of the 21-story Meridian at Ballston Commons Apartments around 10 p.m. on January 2. They donned helmets and parachutes before jumping 200 feet to the ground.

The two men wore masks at the time. They used a valid combination to access the building, though neither lived in the building.

According to ARLNow, police obtained videos showing the pair jumping from the corner of the building near Wilson Boulevard and landing on North Stewart Street.

The stunt is an example of BASE jumping, an extreme sport where people jump from a high point such as a bridge, building, or cliff and use a parachute for their descent. BASE is an acronym for buildings, antennas, spans, and earth.

While BASE jumping is not technically illegal in Virginia, trespassing is. The two men each face one count of trespassing and one count of illegally wearing a mask.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court on March 12 for preliminary hearings.
