Dulles Greenway Eaglets Need Names

What do you think the three baby eagles should be named? Here’s your chance to weigh in.

By Colleen Kelleher May 12, 2023 at 12:27 pm

Here’s your chance to soar with the eagles. The Dulles Greenway and Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy have partnered for a contest to name the three eaglets that were born in March.

“We look forward to reviewing all the creative name choices contributed by our fans,” said Terr Hoffman, public and customer relations manager for the Dulles Greenway.

The three are living on the Dulles Greenway Wetlands in Leesburg. They are now 59, 57, and 54 days old.

Fans of the eaglets can submit their name choices online.

The deadline for the first round is 8 p.m. May 19.

The Dulles Greenway Eagles Facebook page will announce the winning names on Thursday, June 1.

According to the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and the American Eagle Foundation, here’s what to expect from the eaglets between 57 to 77 days old:

  • The little guys are in the stage before flying away from the nest. They are preparing to branch, which means they have both feet off the nest bed and on a branch or tree trunk.
  • It can take up to 14 weeks to fledge or fly from the nest. Male eagles fledge earlier than females. Landings are usually clumsy once they start.
  • At this stage, they walk and play with each other. And, they have fewer feedings but with more food, like their parents.

Of course, you can get your dose of nature on the eagle cam any time.
