With the NFL season about to kick off in less than a month, there is still a lot up in the air about the upcoming season. Today (Aug. 12), one more aspect became clear as the Washington Football Team announced that all NFL games at FedExField will be played without fans during the 2020 season.
The announcement comes just a few weeks after the team released its health and safety measures that were to be put in place for the 2020 season. The organization joins the New York Jets, New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders in teams that will not have fans in attendance this year.
“This decision was not an easy one, but after several discussions with federal, state and local officials—along with input from some of the nation’s foremost medical experts, based right here in the nation’s capital—we are confident that it is the right one,” said team owner Daniel Snyder in a recent press release. “We are working to find ways to make our fans’ presence felt in new and innovative ways for 2020 and can’t wait to welcome the community through the gates as soon as it’s safe.”
The Washington Football Team also said that it has reached out to season ticket holders to discuss alternative options for their ticket plans. For fans that have already purchased single-game tickets for the upcoming season, information is available at washingtonfootball.com.
Even with this announcement, the franchise did not completely close the door on fans returning this season. The franchise states in the press release, “The decision will be reevaluated by all parties should the situation surrounding the pandemic improve over the course of the season.”
Leading up to the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Sept. 13, the organization will be announcing new interactive ways for fans to cheer on the team from home.
