Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency for Virginia on Monday in advance of the arrival of Hurricane Dorian, expected to hit the southeastern region of the U.S. later this week. “I encourage all Virginians to take all necessary precautions to make sure they are prepared as well,” says Northam. Nearly a million students head back to school Tuesday, Sept. 3 in the DMV. Arlington Public Schools has new buildings, programs, names, busses and traffic changes for the 2019-2020 school year, with an estimated 28,000 K-12 students headed back to classrooms across the area. The City of Alexandria is also sending 15,700 students in K-12 back following the Labor Day holiday. (WTOP)
Gridlock traffic has returned to the DMV following the long weekend on the affectionately named “Terrible Traffic Tuesday.” The Tuesday after Labor Day marks an end to the summer lull in traffic congestion across the region and can be heightened due to public school students returning to school. Expect increased delays during rush hours on Capital Beltway, Interstate 270, Interstate 95, Interstate 66 and along the 14th St. bridge. (WTOP)
As Hurricane Dorian causes evacuations along the East Coast of the United States, animal shelters are taking precautions by transporting adoptable animals to other locations, including Lucky Dog Animal Rescue in Arlington.
