Historic Manassas receives drinking permit; Non-binary gender option now available for students

Historic Manassas has received its outdoor drinking permit, which now allows residents to enjoy alcohol outdoors from local restaurants as long as it is sold in plastic cups and it is kept within the designated downtown area. The license goes into effect at Historic Manassas’ First Friday event on Sept. 6. (Inside NoVA)

Public school students in the District, Alexandria City, Arlington and Montgomery County now have the option to mark their gender as ‘X’ on all paperwork, meaning non-binary or unspecified gender. The change is part of a push by local schools for equity among a diverse population of students across the DMV. (WAMU)

AHC Inc.’s collect-and-career-readiness program had a 100% success rate this year. The program saw every participating high school senior, 24 in total, graduate after being partnered with mentors and receiving academic and career support. The students also gathered an estimated $600,000 in scholarships to attend an array of colleges and universities. (Inside NoVA)

Kiwanis Clubs across Northern Virginia are taking on a literacy initiative that will aim to focus on the literacy success of young children. The ideas and plans are still in the works, but 11 clubs from Arlington to Fredericksburg to Leesburg have agreed to participate. (Inside NoVA)
