Metro shutdown leads to more Alexandria traffic; GMU sets sights on expansion

Metro’s summer shutdown of the Blue and Yellow Line stations through Alexandria has led to a 4% increase in traffic around the city. Thirty traffic sensors from Route 1, Duke Street, King Street and other areas showed the increase in averages from spring, with the greatest increases on Duke Street and Van Dorn Street. George Mason University is set to expand its Prince William County campus in Manassas, home to the school’s science and technology buildings. The expansion could potentially include the region’s first medical school. The school expects the enrollment to more than double by 2026. (Inside NoVA)

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has released expansion plans for its Falls Church campus. The campus is south of West Falls Church Metro station (a primary focus of extensive redevelopment in upcoming years), and the expansion is set to bring new academic uses, residential facilities and more. (WTOP)

Vienna is preparing for the upcoming Vienna Town Clean-Up Day being held on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. Everyone is encouraged to help town-government staff pick up trash and remove invasive plants. Interested volunteers can meet at the Town Green on Saturday morning. (Inside NoVA)
