Parasite illness sickens 15 in NoVA; Free community college tuition possible

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Wednesday, July 24.

By Editorial July 24, 2019 at 8:43 am

Health officials are warning of a gastrointestinal illness outbreak in Northern Virginia after 15 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis (caused from a parasite that can be ingested through contaminated food or water) were reported. The two businesses primarily affected have not been identified and an investigation is underway. (Inside NoVA)

Gov. Ralph Northam announced Virginia could soon be offering free community college tuition to residents who, in exchange, work for one year in public service or a high-demand field. The program could cost the state $37 million to start, but would earn more than double the initial investment from income tax revenue in five years. (WUSA9)

The Labor union, UNITE HERE, hosted a rally and worker strike at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday, July 23, and welcomed Democratic presidential hopefuls Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. Protesters were asking for higher worker pay from American Airlines. Clarendon could be getting a new coffee shop by the end of the year. Kaldi’s Social Club announced that the business is hoping to open the Arlington location at Ten at Clarendon at 3110 10th Street by December. Other than coffee, the location could offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as cocktails and beer, if the location is similar to its flagship in Silver Spring, Maryland. (WTOP)
