Foode
Fredericksburg / Southern / $$$
Though Fredericksburg is just over an hour from DC, it’s the real South. And there’s no better specimen at which to taste the testament to this fact than Foode. Chef and co-owner Joy Crump, a Top Chef alum, proves that with practically every dish, from pimiento cheese toast to shrimp and grits with housemade sausage.
But even plates that aren’t Southern are worth a trip. The juicy Bank Burger, with its smoky provolone topping and perfectly crisp herbed fries, is compelling inspiration for a foodie pilgrimage. But just because you’re feasting on a burger doesn’t mean there isn’t room for botanically flavored fried chicken, too.
See This: The owners have turned the vault at this historical bank building into an additional dining space. It looks cool from both inside and out.
Eat This: The Bank Burger, pan-roasted scallops, creme brulee
When to Visit: You’re on the hunt for Southern comfort with an elegant twist.
