50 Best Restaurants 2017: Takumi

A Japanese restaurant in Falls Church

“Can I have the Brussels sprouts?” is a phrase heard at restaurants around the country for the past decade. Takumi’s version is fried and dressed in a barely there ginger sauce with microshreds of carrots for a tiny garnish. It did, however, feel a little unusual to put this order in at a Japanese restaurant.

Takumi is that kind of place, small and eclectic, a new favorite of the Falls Church food crowd. The sushi is clean and sumptuous in an ombre display from pink to orange, from tuna to salmon to char, plus a paint chip study in whites and silvers: butterfish, bronzini, yellowtail, walu, mackerel, a changing cast depending on the day.

The fryer sees action, too: Soft-shell dredged in a gentle coating lets the crab peek through, and a bento box of Japanese-style fried chicken packaged with rice, a mashed potato-like cake and a walu roll.

Though green tea ice cream isn’t as unusual of a sight as it may have been years ago, it’s still the way to add a hint of sweetness.
