Review: Heritage Brewing Co. Market Common Brewpub & Roastery in Arlington

The steak burger is flame-grilled, situated in a brioche bun and served with hand-cut fries. The only other requirement: must pair well with beer.

This week, we’re looking at new burger places in Northern Virginia. Check back daily for reviews of all five of our favorites.

Heritage Brewing Co.’s Heritage Burger: half-pound of prime beef, choice of cheese, dill pickle spears and red onion chutney // $14, comes with fries

Regularly recognized as one of the best burgers in New York, Minetta Tavern’s Black Label Burger is a blend of multiple cuts of beef, including dry-aged, and coated in caramelized onions. That’s not what we have in Arlington, but with Josh Ber, who worked in that New York kitchen and now in Heritage Brewing’s brewpub, there’s what he calls a “steak burger.” It also comes together from a few different cuts and is coarsely ground for a hunkier texture.

“Burgers are a very personal thing,” says Ber, the head chef, who created a basic base with only the red onion chutney—port, balsamic, honey, wine and a few hours—as its cheffy touch.

Otherwise it’s flame-grilled, situated in a brioche bun and served with hand-cut fries. The only other requirement: must pair well with beer. It is, after all, on the menu of the Manassas-based company’s brewery (and coffee roaster) restaurant. // 2900 Wilson Blvd., Arlington
