Belvedere Plantation, the Fredericksburg farm with more than 600 acres, dates back to the 1760s. But after more than 260 years, the property’s future is uncertain.
The Fulks Family has owned the farm since 1968. In a recent Facebook post, the family confirmed that a “technology campus” is planned for the property.
“The decision about our farm’s future was made around our dining table, including now the fifth generation, and it was not made lightly,” the post read. The family said they “have begun working with a very reputable organization that is looking to properly site a technology campus on this property.”
Local media had reported of plans to rezone part of the property for a data center.
Community Response
Some local community members were less than supportive of the news. “Technology Campus is a WILD way to say data center,” wrote Jeff Pugh. While others, like Hannah Bowles, shared that they would no longer support the farm, “Thank you for this information. We will not be attending the fall festival now.”
Others commented that they understood the decision. “Like many in our community, I wish there were other options that would allow Belvedere to remain as we’ve all known and loved it,” wrote Kurtis Davis. “But ultimately, none of us are sitting at your dining room table or carrying the responsibility that comes with making these decisions. It isn’t our place to judge.”
Fall Festival
The owners confirmed that the farm plans to host its annual Fall Harvest Festival as usual, which starts on September 12. The festival runs on select days through November 7 and includes slides, two corn mazes, and pig races.
“When there is more to share, we will, directly and honestly,” the post said. “For now, we hope you’ll come see us this fall like always. We’ll be in the pumpkin patch.”
