On the Market: Historic Bayne-Fowle House Listed for $8M

The 19th-century Alexandria home still features many of its historic details, including preserved graffiti from the home’s time as a military hospital.

The Bayne-Fowle House at 811 Prince St. in Alexandria is full of history. A Virginia Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 19th-century home served as a military hospital during the Civil War. The uppermost floor of the home still has preserved graffiti that is believed to date back to this time period.

Now, the 1854 home has undergone recent renovations, which, “honors those rarified elements while creating a home with lightness and elegance that is perfectly attuned to today’s lifestyle,” according to the listing. Located on a double lot with four bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms, and 8,600 square feet, the Bayne-Fowle House is currently listed for $8 million.

From the foyer, head into the living room, where you can’t possibly miss the 12-foot ceilings. The full-length windows provide ample natural light from the main road. They also feature original interior folding shutters. Original gilt pier mirrors are centered between the windows in both the living and family rooms.

Through the arched doorway, the formal dining room awaits guests. Marble fireplace mantles and triple Niermann Weeks chandeliers in this dining space, the living room, and family room tie together the main level.

The calming, yet elegant, design continues into the primary bathroom. You’ll find double vanities on either side of the spa-like soaking tub with a marble backdrop. Another marble fireplace is situated next to the glass walk-in shower.

On the other side of the bedroom, there is a massive walk-in closet. The marble-topped island is surrounded by custom cabinetry with inset mirrors to help make sure your outfits look good from any angle. Another Niermann Weeks Chandelier brightens the room.

The lower level of the home is where you’ll find the second family room/entertainment area. Steel panels, reclaimed barnwood, and faux paint finishes create a relaxed look. The space has plenty of room to watch movies and play games, while still having room for a gym.

The lower level also includes a rustic, temperature-controlled wine room that has enough storage to hold 1,600 bottles.

Once the spring season returns to Alexandria, you’ll be spending all of your time in the gardens. The outdoor area includes three courtyards: one off the conservatory, one through the arched entryway, and one nestled between the two-car garage and office. The garden is filled with hornbeam trees, hydrangeas, azaleas, ivy, and other seasonal plantings.
