Fairfax County police identified the woman who died after she was struck early Monday by a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue engine in Reston.
Detectives are still investigating the crash that killed Ashley Boardman, 23, of Middleburg. She is the fourth pedestrian to die in Fairfax County this year.
According to police, officers and fire and rescue responded at 2:18 a.m. to Glade Drive west of Laurel Glade Court for a report of a woman who appeared to be intoxicated in the road.
The officer who arrived first did not see Boardman lying in the road as he passed her, the police said. The captain of the fire engine did see her and yelled for the engine to stop, but police said the engine’s driver could not stop in time to avoid striking Boardman. Emergency personnel immediately started advanced medical care. Boardman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department extends our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Boardman” as the police department continues to investigate, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said in a tweet on Monday night.
The preliminary investigation does not indicate that speed was a factor in the crash, police said. Detectives are trying to determine whether Boardman had taken drugs or alcohol.
