John Stirrup, a former Prince William County supervisor, had to be rushed to the hospital after he collapsed while speaking at a county board meeting Tuesday night.
Stirrup of Haymarket, who is now a Republican candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates in District 21, is “feeling much better, resting and even telling a few dad jokes to the hospital staff,” his campaign said in a statement on Twitter.

Stirrup, 65, who previously served two terms on the board, collapsed while criticizing the current board during its public comment time. When the medical emergency occurred, deputies evacuated the board chambers and called 911, the Prince William Times reports.
The Twitter message went on to say that Stirrup was “incredibly grateful for the first responders, medical team, and all those who have reached out and offered prayers and support.”
When the meeting reconvened, Prince William County Executive Christopher Shorter said, “We have all witnessed a medical emergency this evening. I want to first thank the first responders who were here tonight. What we saw in this response was absolutely amazing and we want to thank you very much.”
The county, in a news release, would go on to to wish Stirrup well.
“We would like to extend our heartfelt concern and well wishes to the affected resident and their family during this difficult time,” a news release from Prince William County said.
The board rescheduled its meeting for 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
