Man Dies After Dog Leash Gets Stuck in Metro Train Door

Metro’s watchdog agency is investigating the Dunn Loring incident.

By Colleen Kelleher February 16, 2023 at 10:19 am

The Washington Metrorail Safety Commission is investigating after a man was dragged down a Metro platform and onto the tracks after his dog’s leash got caught in train doors at the Dunn Loring Metro Station Wednesday. The man died.

The Metro Transit Police Department said video shows the incident occurred about 450 feet from the cab operator, who made “two safe door checks before moving the train.” It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m.

“The leash appears to be tied to the person, which was unfortunately caught in the door, leaving the dog with no ID inside the car,” the police said in a tweet.

NBC Washington identified the man who died as Harold Riley, 50. His daughters said the dog is a service dog. It is now with the family. Riley leaves behind two children and four grandchildren, his family said.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased,” the police said.
