The National Gallery of Art’s New Game Is the Latest Wordle Variation

Challenge your art knowledge with Artle, a new daily brain-teaser made for art lovers, by art lovers.

By Cyna Mirzai July 29, 2022 at 4:18 pm

In a matter of months, Wordle became a national phenomenon as the go-to game to compete with your friends while also challenging your brain. Its popularity has led to many iterations of the game, such as Quordle and Phoodle. The newest version, however, is perfect for art lovers.

Artle is a daily brain teaser game created by the National Gallery of Art. Unlike Wordle, where you guess a word, art fans will guess the artist behind one of the gallery’s 150,000 artworks. A red ‘X’ will appear if your guess is incorrect, and you will be shown another piece by the same artist. You’ll get four tries to name the artist, and the game refreshes with a new puzzle each day.

Artle allows you to click through and learn more about that day’s artist and artworks, and continue exploring to prepare yourself for future Artles.

The National Gallery’s digital division is focused on building experiences that help citizens interact with art and creativity.

“The emergence of daily guessing games in recent months inspired our digital product and experience team and I to create a daily game using the National Gallery’s collection that helps the public discover art while having fun,” says Steven Garbarino, a senior product manager at the museum.

Regardless of your level of art expertise, everyone is encouraged to play the game. However, if you do want to improve your art knowledge, Garbarino recommends exploring the galleries or browsing their collection on nga.gov.

Ready to try it for yourself? You can play Artle here.
