Hurricane Dorian to arrive in DMV today; Dominion Energy prepares for storms

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Friday, Sept. 6.

By Editorial September 6, 2019 at 9:14 am

Tropical storm force winds are likely to hit the southern Virginia coast into Friday night, with minimal impact reaching inland past Washington, DC. West of I-95, it will be mostly breezy and cloudy throughout the day. Moderate impacts from the storm are likely south of the Chesapeake Bay, with potential beach erosion, coastal flooding and rip currents. (WUSA9)

Dominion Energy crews from Northern Virginia are prepared to help hard-hit areas of Hurricane Dorian. Twelve employees from the company, including their four bucket trucks, one augur truck and a specialty truck, left Alexandria and headed toward the Hampton Roads area, where the company is predicting a higher potential for loss of power. Broad Run High School senior Shreyaa Venkat will be representing her nonprofit, NEST4US, at the #Digital4Good event at Facebook’s headquarters in California later this month. Venkat co-founded the nonprofit organization with her younger sister in 2016 and dedicated its mission to feeding the homeless in Washington, DC. (Loudoun Times-Mirror)

Route 1 will likely see more traffic over the next year as the Chatham Bridge, a key connection between Fredericksburg and Stafford County, is set to close for 16 months for repairs, starting as soon as May 2020. The 70-year-old bridge is expected to force a detour for an estimated 16,000 vehicles a day to other routes. (WTOP)
