Storms leave DMV residents without power; Amazon donates largest company contribution to Virginia politicians

Northern Virginia’s daily dose of local and national news for Friday, May 31.

Storms swept through NoVA on Thursday, May 30, leaving roughly 4,300 people without power, according to Dominion Energy and BGE in Baltimore. A majority of the customers left in the dark were located in the Fairfax area. The National Weather Service later reported a tornado touched down in Howard County. (The Washington Post)

According to a brief report, Amazon (with its sights still set on Arlington for HQ2) recently donated $75,000 to Virginia politicians. The five contributions totaled the highest amount the company has ever given to politicians in one state at one time. (Washington Business Journal)

The Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool will be drained this week to repair a broken water line. According to the National Park Service, the water line’s complications affect the water quality of the pool and could lead to unwanted algae growth. The pool should be refilled and operational by June 16. (WTOP)

Chantilly Air, a Washington, DC charter and aviation services provider, broke ground on its new fixed-base operation at Manassas Regional Airport this week. The location is expected to open in early 2020 and will offer over 90,000 square feet of hangar and office space, passenger lounge areas, a crew fitness center and more. (Potomac Local)
