In 1969, at a Reston farmhouse, Virginia Tech University opened its first Northern Virginia Graduate Center, with just 65 students.

Fast forward 50 years later and the university’s graduate program has expanded to seven campuses, with programs from five colleges, serving almost 800 master’s degrees and Ph.D. students.

On April 23, Virginia Tech will celebrate the 50th anniversary in the region with a program at the Northern Virginia Center’s Falls Church location.

The program begins at 4 p.m. with a panel discussion titled, “Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and University Collaborations.” It will be held in Room 214 at the center. Panelists include Virginia Tech alumna Betty Chao, founder, president and CEO of WESTECH International Inc.; Afroze Mohammed, associate director of strategic alliances for the university; and Laura Freeman, associate director of the Intelligent Systems Lab at Virginia Tech’s Hume Center.

Following the panel at 6 p.m., a reception will be held with a short program of speakers by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands, Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education Karen P. DePauw, Associate Graduate School Dean and Director of the Northern Virginia Center Kenneth Wong and Betty Chao.

Tours of the center will also be available, beginning at 5:15 p.m. and after the evening program.
