It’s been awhile since we’ve been able to step foot in a local library and get lost in the endless rows of books. We can’t yet go back, but these family-friendly events will bring you a bit closer to the library, without leaving the comfort of your home.
Below, find five events worth tuning into this week from Fairfax County Public Library and Alexandria Library that will engage you and your children for a few hours each day.
Early Literacy in Action: Giraffes Can’t Dance
This week on Fairfax County Public Library’s Facebook page, tune in to catch live story time that will include an interactive craft for preschoolers. Little ones will need this template (which you can print at home!), some colored paper or cardstock, scissors, glue or tape, and markers or crayons. Read along and let your child enjoy creating their very own giraffe crown in honor of the book. // Friday, May 29, 10-11 a.m.
Yoga, Baby!
For parents with children ages 6 weeks to 11 months, this at-home yoga class is for you. You’ll do some fun, easy stretches that engage your little one, and enjoy some one-on-one time that will help you let go of your stresses and enjoy 45 minutes of “you” time. Just clear some space on the floor for you and your infant to sit and lie down and you’re ready to move! No previous yoga experience is required. // Friday, May 29, 10-10:45 a.m.
Virtual Toddler Rock N’ Read
Reading with your toddler may just not be enough to keep them engaged, so tune into story time with Miss Katie to dance, sing along and hear a children’s book from the Alexandria Library collection. The event is great for children up to 5 years old, and you can even get a copy of the song lyrics before class here, so your toddler can sing along to their heart’s content. // Monday, June 1, 11-11:30 a.m.
Eggshell Sidewalk Chalk
Time to combine two great ways to spend time with your kids: an at-home science lesson and an earth-friendly craft that require only a few household items, like eggshells, flour, water and food coloring. Join the staff at Fairfax County Public Library as they show your children how to create sidewalk chalk with eggshells (which contain calcium, the same material used to make the store-bought chalk) and then let their creativity soar as they head outside with their handmade creations. // Monday, June 1, 3-3:30 p.m.
Family Story Time with Miss Lisa
Stories, songs, movement and more are jam-packed into Miss Lisa’s virtual story time for your kids. Children of all ages are welcome to join in on the fun by tuning into Zoom, singing and reading along, dancing around the living room and catching a surprise or two along the way. This story time is the perfect precursor to a fun family lunch and another week of making the most of reading. // Tuesday, June 2, 11-11:45 a.m.
