A new IKEA is open now in Pentagon City, but it looks a little different from the large warehouses you’re used to. This shop is a “plan and order point,” meaning that you can browse the showrooms and talk with consultants to get inspiration but won’t be able to pick up the furniture right then and there.
Instead, employees provide “one-on-one consultation services for kitchen design, bedroom and bathroom solutions, small space living solutions and so much more,” a news release said. Employees help you order the items you want for pickup or home delivery.
“With full-service delivery, this is a new, intimate experience that’s uniquely IKEA. It’s where design expertise meets convenience,” said Raquel Ely, market manager of IKEA U.S.
The Pentagon City store, located in the Pentagon Centre shopping center at 1201 S. Hayes St., Arlington, occupies a 5,012-square-foot space. It opened its doors on August 16, and operates 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
Unlike traditional IKEA stores, plan and order points do not contain restaurants, bistros, or Swedish food markets.
This is the first store of its kind in the DMV area. Plan and order points are also coming soon to Fairfax Town Center and Gaithersburg, Maryland, according to a May news release from IKEA.
“Whether planning a big project or simply looking for inspiration, we hope to provide a more convenient way to shop. Our goal is to continually transform to better meet the needs of our customers in Virginia and beyond,” said Javier Quiñones, CEO and chief sustainability officer of IKEA U.S.
You do not need an appointment to browse the store but will need one to work with a design consultant. Pentagon City design appointments can be booked now on the IKEA website.
