On Sunday, April 26, running enthusiasts from near and far will race their way to the finish line across the George Washington Parkway as part of the 36th annual Parkway Classic. This year, host Pacers Running has chosen PNC Bank as the title sponsor, altering the name of the yearly affair to the PNC Parkway Classic.
While the event began in 1984 as a local race, it has since grown to become well-known across the East Coast as a result of its meandering, scenic course through Alexandria, overlooking the Potomac River. This year, for the first time ever, runners can choose between two distances—a 10-miler race starting at the Mount Vernon Estate or the brand-new 5K starting at Oronoco Bay Park. Plus, athletic kiddos who don’t want to miss out on the affair can partake in the the kids’ dash. All racers, no matter which course they choose, will cross the finish line in Old Town.
Also new this year is a guest appearance from the Washington Nationals Racing President George Washington, who will greet all runners at the finish line. Following the morning-long workout, race participants can enjoy a post-race celebration at Oronoco Bay Park, consisting of live music, a pop-up beer garden from Port City Brewing Company and other entertaining activities.
Since its inception, the Parkway Classic has raised close to $1 million for local and regional charities, as several organizations are chosen each year to be designated partners. The 2020 charities are Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, Rebuilding Together DC • Alexandria and Together We Bake.
