Put a little oink in your morning cup of joe. Starting July 4, Fairfax wholesale coffee distributor, Cafe Kreyol will begin selling a cold-pressed bacon-flavored coffee. CEO Joey Stazzone says he was inspired to make this particular flavor because of his “love for bacon and coffee and the desire to consume both at once with minimal effort.” The drink is made by combining Cafe Kreyol’s signature cold-pressed Yoda Brew, made with organic Haitian blue coffee and organic bacon-flavored syrup.
Stazzone’s cold-pressed process includes letting the grinds sit in cold water for 24 hours and then pressing out the water. “The extraction process is different than hot,” says Strazzone’s, “so you get more of the sweet notes without the acid that would be extracted with normal coffee brewing.”
Cafe Kreyol is based on a direct trade system. This system supports the ideology that farmers should get paid based on the quality of their product. Stazzone says, “My CFO and I both got out of prison five years ago and with a desire to help people instead of commit crimes. We set off to Haiti to find organic coffee and create sustainable jobs.” Since that time, Stazzone and his company created over 300 jobs for Haitians in the Nord region.
What could be trendier than organic, bacon-flavored coffee? Yoda, of “Star Wars” fame—Cafe Kreyol’s unofficial cold-pressed coffee mascot—wearing Ray Bans on the label. (See here.) Stazzone says one of Cafe Kreyol’s target audiences is hipsters and “Yoda is the proto-hipster from which all other hipsters find there essence.” / Find Yoda Brew cold-pressed coffee at area Whole Foods and online.
