Charcuterie has been all the rage for years now and Northern Virginia wine bars, bistros, and cheese shops have taken full advantage. Here are five wine bars and bistros in Arlington and Alexandria that have taken charcuterie to the next level.
Cheesetique
This cozy wine bar and restaurant has locations in Del Ray and Shirlington. Its cheese and charcuterie board allows you to go back multiple times to experience different bites. The board includes three items from Cheesetique’s rotating list plus its signature pimiento cheese, a baguette, and sweet and savory accompaniments. If you want to add a bit more to your snack, try the warm olives and manchego, the perfect salty complement to a glass of wine. 2411 Mt. Vernon Ave., Alexandria; 4024 Campbell Ave., Arlington

Sonoma Cellar
If you’re looking to warm up this winter, get your California vibes at Sonoma Cellar, an Alexandria favorite. The airy tasting room and bistro pays homage to its West Coast namesake with a themed cheese plate. It includes West Coast cheeses, including a flavorful rogue smoked blue, spicy chile pepper Gouda, extra sharp cheddar, and chèvre with locally sourced honey. Served with homemade breads, it’s a great option to share with a date or a friend or two. 207 King St., Alexandria
Grape + Bean
This little multi-hyphenate is an Alexandria restaurant, wine shop, and market. While you don’t want to miss Grape + Bean’s tasting and pairing events, it’s also worth stopping by for its cheese and charcuterie. You can choose from either three or five cheeses or meats. Plates are served with an assortment of artisan breads and additions like dried fruit, onion jam, cornichons, and more. Noteworthy cheese includes the Italian organic gorgonzola dolce. As for meat, don’t miss the Felino Toscana salami from Smoking Goose Meatery in Indianapolis. 118 South Royal St., Alexandria
Screwtop Wine Bar
Visiting Screwtop Wine Bar is worth it for its “Cheesemonger Plate” alone. For just $25, cheese lovers will go crazy for Prairie Breeze cheddar, mini brie, Toscano applewood smoked cheddar, and more. The platter is served with fig cake, mustard, caperberries, caramelized walnuts, and spicy plum chutney, as well as a baguette, crackers, and dried fruit. It’s a great accompaniment to one of Screwtop’s wine flights. 1025 N. Fillmore St., Arlington
Grand Cru Wine Bar + Bistro
The romantic Grand Cru is a great Valentine’s Day spot, feeling a bit like France in Northern Virginia. Its charcuterie platter is a wonderful menu item to share with your loved one. Served with cornichons and onion marmalade, the prosciutto, salami, and bresaola are fresh and tasty. Grab an artisan cheese platter served with honeycomb and fruit compote for enough food that feels like a full meal. 4301 Wilson Blvd., Arlington
